National Dog Day a Time for Celebration—and Concern

The heartbreaking reality is that every day, millions of these hopeful canines go without the love, security and companionship that our own pets are so fortunate to know.

For those of us who have dogs, every day is a celebration of the special bond we share with our canine companions. With their wagging tails, goofy personality quirks and cute faces, who can blame us? But we aren’t the only ones who feel this way. Did you know that in 2004, National Dog Day was established and is celebrated every year on Aug. 26? This special day has been set aside to show deep appreciation for the dogs that have come into our worlds and touched our hearts. This day honors the family dogs and service canines that work selflessly each day to save lives, offer love, ensure safety and bring comfort. A New Leash on Life for 3-Legged Dog

Beekers joins others with weight loss and exercise goals for the New Year.

There's a happy ending for the three-legged Golden Retriever who was found in the Rancho Bernardo area in December. Though his owners were never found, the dog was adopted just in time for the holidays by Jeff and Debbie Schroeder of Vista and their sons Wyatt, 12, and Zeke, 10. The 4-year-old male was picked up as a stray on Dec. 9 by a good Samaritan who took him to the Carmel Mountain Ranch Veterinary Hospital. Pet of the Week

Pet of the Week

An energetic 1-year-old Australian Cattle Dog Blend is looking for a home.

Even though my name is Baby Girl, I'm not a baby at all!  I love to rough and tumble with the big boys!  I'm a little over 1 year old and could really use a home with an active guy who has a lot of energy.  I can just imagine us going for long walks, or running would be even better, and ohhhhhh ... would I love to play football with the guys!  I guess you could say I'm a tomboy!  At any rate, I'm a good girl and will let you know when I have to "go out," and there's nothing I dream of more than being in a new, forever home for the holidays.  I'm a spayed, Australian Cattle Dog Blend and I'm happiest when you give me a job or keep me busy.  I hope you have time to come visit me!
