Sanders Jokingly Refers to Raiders Fans as ‘Subhuman’ During Salute to Seau

Cheers greet San Diego mayor's knock against rival Oakland, booed several times at event.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders on Friday night was among many civic lights and NFL stars to hail Junior Seau at his Celebration of Life at Qualcomm Stadium. He also got a dig in against Oakland Raiders fans. Sanders said perhaps the highest compliment paid Seau was that he was “always the object of the loudest, nastiest, stupidest chants from the knuckle-dragging hoard of subhumans otherwise known as Raider fans.’’ About a quarter of Qualcomm Stadium was filled on Friday night for a public memorial for the former San Diego Chargers linebacker, who was buried earlier in the morning in his native Oceanside. Several former Chargers shared stories at the Celebration of Life for Seau, who was found dead in his Oceanside home last week of a self…

Distant Cheers: Junior Seau Fan Pays Respects from the Nosebleed Section

Chargers great was saluted from near and far at free Qualcomm Stadium Celebration of Life.

Down on the stage, facing perhaps 15,000 fans, NFL and civic celebrities recalled Junior Seau. Up across Qualcomm Stadium, facing the setting sun, 31-year-old graphic artist Alex Gaytan* of Chula Vista was alone but for two strangers who saw him in the highest row of seats, and came to join him. “My first Chargers game, my dad brought me here when I was this high,” Gaytan said of his father, Jesus, still living. “It was up here. That was the first time I saw Seau play.” With blue GREATNE55 jerseys draped over adjacent seats, he explained: “So I figure there’s no better place to sit and pay my respects than by sitting next to 55. That’s why I’m here.” In Section 55. Near or far, all perspectives were represented Friday night at a free …

Photos: 2,000 Gather for Private Seau Ceremony

A private celebration for the fallen former NFL star brought hundreds of friends and family to Calvary Chapel in Oceanside Friday.

Some 2,000 friends and family of NFL legend and former Charger Junior Seau gathered at Calvary Chapel in Oceanside on Friday. “It was beautiful,” said Lauren Godinet, Junior's niece, of Friday's celebration of life.  Seau was found dead at his beachfront home on May 2. Friday’s occasion filled with joy, he said, adding that eulogies by friends and family were held together by a common theme — her uncle’s smile. Her father, Wilson, said the service was “positive and uplifting.” “It just made you want to get closer to God,” he said. The event featured island music and various professional football players attended, including John Lynch, Ronnie Lott and Sean Salisbury. Another memorial is taking place Friday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego …

Qualcomm to Host Public Memorial Service for Junior Seau Friday

The service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

A heavy-hitting lineup of former Chargers football players tops the speakers' list for Friday's memorial service for Junior Seau at Qualcomm Stadium, the team announced Wednesday. Quarterback Dan Fouts, safety Rodney Harrison and running back LaDainian Tomlinson will speak at the "Celebration of Life" honoring Seau, the ex- linebacker who fatally shot himself in the chest one week ago today. Harrison, in particular, has spoken passionately about how the 43-year-old Oceanside native mentored him after he was drafted. Other scheduled speakers include Bobby Ross, the head coach of the lone Chargers team to go to the Super Bowl; former Tampa Bay and Denver standout safety John Lynch; and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. The event begins at 6:30 …

PATCH POLL

Poll: Is the Season Over for the San Diego Padres—Last in NL West?

Only one team in Major League Baseball has a worse record than the local professional ballclub.

The San Diego Padres are on a roll—having won two games in a row.  Better yet, the 11-20 Friars are no longer the worst team in baseball. (Thank you, 8-21 Twins!)  But mired in last place in the National League West, the Padres are 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Dodgers. (The horrors!) It could be worse. We could have paid $240 million for a player only to end up last, like the Angels.  The question remains: Is the season over for the Padres?  Or does hope remain for a May Miracle and pennant race?

I agree whole heartedly with this statement! I predicted only 60 wins for the season in a poll taken before the opener. We could maybe compete against the LL Pony league caliber right now. Come on Chargers August preseason.   more ›

Photo Gallery: Junior Seau Remembered at Oceanside Paddle-Out

Locals honored the former Chargers player Sunday.

Friends and fans of ex-Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, who killed himself Wednesday with a shot to the chest, held a paddle-out memorial in front of his waterfront home in Oceanside Sunday. The 43-year-old Oceanside native played 20 seasons in the National Football League, mostly for the Chargers, but also for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. In 1992, he created the Junior Seau Foundation, an organization formed to raise money and other resources for programs that educate young people and guide them on positive paths. The San Diego Chargers will host a public celebration of life* in honor of the former linebacker and community icon at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Qualcomm Stadium, according to team officials. Guest speakers …

I have to agree with the above comments- I don't know the family personally but have been aware that Tyler is Junior Seau's oldest. Bless his heart, although it is a blessing that he hasn't been harrassed by the media, the downdside is that not having been acknowledged may mean he is not given ALL the support he so desperately needs right now. My husband took his own life and left 4 children and …   more ›

Medical Examiner's Office Confirms Seau Committed Suicide

Researchers may study his brain for repetitive injury if his family consents.

Thursday the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Junior Seau’s death was a suicide. The 43-year-old NFL legend died Wednesday inside his Oceanside home from a gunshot wound to the chest, which the Medical Examiner determined to be self-inflicted. Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Craig Nelson conducted the forensic autopsy, according to a news release from the county. The autopsy included a full inspection of Seau’s body and organs—and a host of laboratory studies, including a toxicology report and a microscopic examination of organs and tissues. The results of those tests will be part of the final autopsy report. Researchers outside of the medical examiner's office may study Seau's brain for repetitive injury if his family consents, …

VERY intersting and sad video from ESPN's Outside The Lines with former Bears Quarterback (and for one season San Diego Chargers QB) Jim McMahon discussing his own issues today with memory loss. This interview was done just weeks before the tragic loss of Junior Seau. He addresses the Dave Duerson suicide and states that a month prior there were no obvious signs of such despair from Duerson. Poll: Was Junior Seau the Greatest Chargers Player of All Time?

Death of No. 55, linebacker legend, moved many to revisit NFL superstar’s career and legacy.

Tributes to Junior Seau are pouring in.  His fierce passion on the field and his community service off it have led some to hail the future Hall of Famer as the best San Diego Chargers player ever. In the wake of his shocking death Wednesday at home in Oceanside, feelings are strong.  But does No. 55 top other Bolts on the all-time greats list? One list ranks him No. 3, behind quarterback Dan Fouts and tight end Kellen Winslow—and ahead of Charlie Joyner and Rodney Harrison. Or is LaDainian Tomlinson the best Bolt ever? You make the call.

Sorry guys, I loved Junior but the greatest Charger of all was Lance Alworth! Maybe the early days of the AFL are too far gone, but the first player of the AFL to go in the Pro Football Hall of Fame can't be ignored.   more ›

The Mindset for Success in the Sports World

A quick look at the key components to becoming "mentally tough."

I hear coaches and athletes talk a lot about being “mentally tough,” but what are the characteristics needed to be or become mentally tough? According to sport psychology author Ellis Cashmore, mental toughness qualities are described as the following: “Mental toughness describes a bundles of qualities that include an unusually high level of resolution, a refusal to be intimidated, and ability to stay focused in high-pressure situations, a capacity for retaining an optimum level of arousal through a competition...an unyielding attitude when being beaten, a propensity to take risks when rivals show caution and inflexibly, perhaps obstinate insistence on finishing a contest rather than conceding defeat.” Certainly athletes and coaches need …
