Red, hot lipstick: When walking by any department store this year, I saw that every makeup counter had it. Christian Dior called it "Roulette Red," Lancôme called its "Smoky Rouge" and MAC called its "Lady Danger." When paired with simple eye makeup, the trend is stunning. WireImage

Bow ties: This year, the classic bow tie went further than the red carpet and Justin Timberlake's closet. The James-Bond-style piece made its clever way back into our lives, successfully prepping up any outfit, including those involving jeans or slacks. The piece became evermore captivating in 2010 with the help of fashion designer Gregory Allen who truly revamped the bow tie from Steve Urkle-friendly to vogue and swanky . The Toronto-based designer created a collection of bow ties that is simply magnum opus. Experientia docet!
Flannel: Flannel was hot this year and I'm unsure how well it served us. We saw it all over the streets though it was rarely on the runways. At any rate, it's a trend that we can probably leave in 2010.

Lace and sheer (Disclaimer: I'm sorry if I offend any fashionistas or fashionistos by categorizing this as one.): The abundance of lace and sheer took sexy and classy to a whole other level. Moreover, it ranged from Angelina Jolie-tight-fitting to Taylor Swift-angelic and flowly. When worn well—meaning no black sheer with cheetah-print bras and a whole lotta confidence—the trend worked well.
Military: Perhaps it's a salute to our unsung heroes or an impassive display of admiration, but apparel influenced by 20th century military members made its way into our 2010 lives. From the big coats to the aviator-style jackets to the modest but bold Army green—the Common-era, clean-cut pieces took over most closets this year.
Ankle boots: Yes, yes, yes. Ankle boots are the best thing to happen since Destiny's Child's No. 1 album. They came in brown at 4-inches tall, they came in a suede blue at 3 inches and most came in black varying in height. They're brilliant.

The first year in the new decade brought both breathtaking designs and ideas that should never have been executed. Either way, a number of trends took off this year.

Here are the top 10 trends of 2010.
