San Diego Police Officer Accused of Sexual Battery During Traffic Stop After Mardi Gras

A San Diego Police officer has been arrested after allegedly committing sexual battery during a traffic stop after a downtown Mardi Gras celebration Tuesday, police said Friday.
Anthony Arevalos, an 18-year veteran of the department, was assigned to the Traffic Division at the time of the alleged battery. Arevalos was arrested and booked into county jail Friday on suspicion of sexual battery, false imprisonment and assault under the color of authority, according to a news release.
The incident was alleged to have taken place on Tuesday when a 32-year-old woman was stopped by Arevalos as he drove out of downtown San Diego following the Mardi Gras celebration. The woman was suspected of driving under the influence, according to the release.
“The male officer is accused of sexually battering the woman during the course of the contact,” the release stated. Arevalos' peace officer powers have been revoked and he has been suspended from duty without pay during the investigation, according to police.
