Pets Show Patriotism in Fourth of July Costume Contest
Participants wore red, white and blue ensembles to celebrate the Fourth of July at the 2011 Patriotic Pet Contest at Webb Park.
Dogs, a rabbit and even a bird showed off their patriotic outfits and accessories during the 2011 Patriotic Pet Contest at Webb Park in Rancho Bernardo on Monday.
About 10 pets dressed in red, white and blue ensembles participated in the annual Spirit of the Fourth celebration.
“It’s a fun thing to do,” said Jan Wolfert, who showed off her Australian Labradoodle, Sidney. “We live in the community so we like to be involved and support the activities.”
Sidney, who was decked out in American flag bows, was the largest participating pet.
The smallest pet was a parrot named Tweety. The 7-year-old bird earned second place for its patriotic “flight suit,” which his owner created.
Tweety and Flopsy, a 1-year-old Holland Lop rabbit, were the only non-canine participants.
Although Flopsy did not win, his owner was proud of his effort. It was his first time participating in a pet contest.
“I just want to show his cuteness to the world,” said Courtney Ransom, Flopsy's owner. “I didn’t realize mostly dogs would be entering, but who says bunnies can't be in contests?”
Pet owners introduced their furry or feathery family members to the small crowd before they walked back to their seats.
Bailey, a small Yorkie, was the only pet that performed a trick. He stood up on his hind legs, which earned him second place.
Wearing the most elaborate costume, Black Eyed Jack, or “BJ,” placed first. The English bulldog was dressed in a wig, hat and coat to resemble Thomas Jefferson. The 4-year-old dog also carried the Declaration of Independence and a mini blunderbuss on his back.
“The Declaration of Independence is what I think helped him win,” said Marie Weir, BJ’s owner. “He is carrying the most sacred document of all.”
BJ showed off his outfit like a pro. The show dog has won other contests before, Weir said.
“It feels great,” Weir said. “I don’t think he’s really thrilled. I think he’s ready to lose the wig.”
Although BJ, Tweety and Bailey took home first, second and third place ribbons, all of the pets received participating ribbons for their patriotism.
